Special Note: To meet our mission statement, K-9 PALS needs volunteers for so many purposes, but fundraising and foster homes are critical to meeting our goals.

Foster Care. K-9 PALS Volunteers are needed to for providing foster homes for our dogs. You will need to complete the foster requirements and be approved to help care for puppies, sick dogs, or dogs that would benefit from behavior training and socialization in a home environment. Foster dogs are property of K-9 PALS and they must be in foster homes until permanent homes can be found for them. It is a very rewarding experience to provide a safe and loving home until an adoptive home is found for each dog. Please consider being part of our foster team!

VOLUNTEERING IN OUR PARTNER SHELTERS

K-9 PALS Volunteers who want to volunteer in our county shelters to work hands-on with the shelter dogs must complete the specific requirements for volunteering in the shelters. K-9 PALS provides services for dogs in the three county animal shelters in Santa Barbara County. Having our volunteers also volunteer in the shelters is a tremendous advantage to K-9 PALS because then our volunteers have opportunity for hands-on experience with the shelter dogs we fundraise for, provide veterinary care for, provide promotions, events and other activities for, and also provide rescue and foster for.

Commmunity events for Shelter and rescue group dogs. Volunteers who are approved and trained to work with the dogs from the county shelter will be able to take adoptable dogs from those shelters to community events such as K-9 PALS fundraisers, adoption events, outreach events, responsible pet education events, and off-site day trips around the community. K-9 PALS provides additional opportunities for our volunteers to learn from dog behavior trainers in the community.

Open Paw Training Program
K-9 PALS volunteers and volunteers of the County Shelter have an opportunity to practice the Open Paw Four-level training that teaches dogs to feel comfortable in the shelter environment and to enjoy the company of people.

Volunteers learn to teach dogs basic manners, such as COME, SIT, DOWN and LEAVE IT. Volunteers also are shown how to teach dogs to present themselves in the most impressive way to potential adopters so that they can find happy new homes-and stay in those happy homes!
